This office combines the best of traditional medicine with functional, metabolic, and anti-aging medicine to help our patients lead the healthiest, most productive lives they can. We make every effort to identify and treat the causes of health problems instead of merely masking the symptoms with drugs or surgery. Heartburn is not caused by a Prilosec deficiency, heart attacks aren’t caused by a Lipitor deficiency, and migraines aren’t caused by an Imitrex deficiency.
The focus of functional, metabolic, and anti-aging medicine is primarily on you the patient rather than the diseases you may have. A classic example of this difference regards the treatment of cancer. Conventional treatment involves killing—the tumor. The tumor is the enemy. Unfortunately, the treatments that are designed to kill tumors often kill the patients who have the tumors… or lead to new cancers or other diseases, whether now or down the road. Whereas the most successful treatment of some cancers BEGINS with removal of the tumor, this is usually where conventional medicine ENDS. In functional medicine, we ask WHY the cancer might have happened in the first place. Many of the causes of cancers are well known in research but ignored in conventional medicine. Why? Because they don’t involve drugs that can be patented. By contrast, we focus on strengthening the immune system, removing toxins, and correcting deficiencies and imbalances with the aim of preventing cancer from recurring. What’s the use of removing a breast, for example—other than to buy time—if you have done nothing to prevent the same forces at work from causing cancer in the other breast?
Anti-aging medicine further involves the early detection, prevention, treatment, and reversal of age-related decline. Why is it that some 90-year-olds keep working, traveling, fishing, and serving others while some 40-year-olds come home from work and crash, or hobble along from place to place? It’s not aging, it’s inflammation. It’s mitochondrial decay. It’s hormone deficiencies. It’s toxins. It’s hidden infections. It’s vitamin and mineral deficiencies. These are some of the underlying problems we address to promote health and vitality throughout the lifespan, not merely to treat and control disease.
Some of the problems we treat on a daily basis include:
